How to discover your strengths and become a success: The NEARSOL approach

How to discover your strengths and become success: The NEARSOL approach

A business’s Unique Selling Proposition or USP makes you buy this type of brand over the other. It’s what makes you buy a pricey bottle of mineral water that claims to have come from the Alps. Why do you choose one item over another? Or why does one person get a job over other candidates?

Competition is a given in business. And with e-commerce becoming the norm, it’s not local competitors we are up against. Knowing that we have lots of options available, it’s natural to want to understand what makes a brand different from its competitors or if it is a better choice for you.

Knowing where and how to position yourself can spell the difference between standing out or blending in.

In a nutshell, a USP should answer this question:

“What makes you different from the competition?” What’s your greatest strength?

How do you make a compelling, Unique Selling Proposition?

Your Unique Selling Proposition should accentuate your most significant strengths. It should be based on what makes you, your company, product, or service valuable to the market.

But do take note that BEING UNIQUE ISN’T ENOUGH. You MUST DIFFERENTIATE YOURSELF IN SOME ASPECT THAT YOUR AUDIENCE CARES ABOUT. It won’t matter if your hammer comes in pastel colors if your clients don’t care.

Here are a few tips to get you, your brand, or your organization that unique selling point.

· BE ASSERTIVE

“I have always been a hard worker and a fast learner. I like to take on new challenges”. Be specific. I enjoy taking on new challenges and have applied these skills in my current position. Give an example and say how you use these straight in your everyday job.

· ZERO-IN ON WHAT YOUR TARGET MARKET VALUES

Think about what matters to the hiring company? What qualities or experience do they care about? Intellectual Vitality, Point of Excellence initiatives, and personality are all important factors in determining the type of people an employer looks for. Intellectual Vitality shows that you are thoughtful & smart; points of Excellence initiatives allow you to prove your skills to employers through activities in the workplace environment. Discussing your personality is likely to impress an employer, as it will reflect your positive, humble, and warm attitude.

· CRAFT A CATCHPHRASE THAT YOU CAN STAND BEHIND WITH CONVICTION

Use a slogan to highlight your USP. You can come up with a catchphrase that you can use repeatedly; a slogan is memorable and, when used correctly, reinforces your personal brand in the minds of others.
